For approximately 1 year I was experiencing extreme tachycardia. After becoming frustrated and not getting answers from a local cardiologist I contacted the NYSPIA Medical Group. I was quickly seen by Dr. O’Brien at Capital Cardiology; he and his staff were extremely professional and accommodating. Dr. O’Brien ordered several tests, all of which were completed and reviewed with me in the same appointment. Dr. O’Brien explained everything to my spouse and I and answered all of our questions. Ultimately, I had a heart ablation at Albany Medical Center, and I have nothing but positive comments regarding the treatment and care I received. Dr. O’Brien had astounding bedside manner, and it was obviously he truly cares for his patients.

Earlier this year, I suffered an injury to my chest muscles while on-duty. I went to the local ER and was told I may have a torn muscle which would require immediate surgical intervention. I was also told this type of surgery is not common and most surgeons don’t have experience with it. I contacted the NYSPIA Medical Group and within a few hours I had an appointment with one of the best surgeons in the State. Dr. Rami Elshaar from Western NY Orthopedics gave me an appointment within 72 hours, and scheduled my surgery for a few days later. Dr. Elshaar completed the surgery without any issues and now I’m on the road to recovery. The NYSPIA Medical Group answered my call and got me help immediately despite my rank or title. I was treated with compassion and respect, with all of my questions and concerns answered quickly. I highly recommend the NYSPIA Medical Group to any member of the NYSP.

I am eternally grateful for the support, kindness, and resources the NYSPIA Medical Group provided during this incredibly difficult time for my family.
When my father was suddenly diagnosed with glioblastoma, we were overwhelmed and urgently seeking the best possible care. Through the connection your union facilitated with Northwell Health, we were quickly able to reach Dr. John A. Boockvar and his extraordinary team at Lenox Hill Hospital. They graciously accepted my father’s case without delay and successfully performed a complex surgery that gave our family some much-needed hope.
This support went far beyond what I ever expected from a workplace union. It demonstrated that NYSPIA stands by its members not only professionally, but also during life’s most personal and uncertain moments.

In July, my wife began to experience medical issues which put her in need of immediate medical attention. Due to local providers leaving the area, she was left without a primary care doctor or her specialist. Previously scheduled appointments had been made with new doctors, however, her appointment dates were still months out, leaving her without the ability to be seen outside of an Emergency Room setting. I contacted NYSPIA and was immediately put in touch with somebody who helped us get an appointment, and establish long-term care. Without the assistance of NYSPIA my wife would have been left without a provider and the necessary medical attention she needed.
